Paint Box Mystery Camps 2011 at Field & Studio

The Paint Box Mysteries unfold as each day a new set of clues lead us to a new time and place and a new medium to explore.  Each camp offers an exciting format for learning art and science, concentrating on the weekly theme and engaging campers in the process. With treasure hunts, games and stories we will sharpen life skills such as following directions and working together as a team in a small group setting.  In the studio campers will create their own art in a step by step process aimed to increase artistic observation, drawing skills and confidence.  Science also comes to life with experiments and studies in geology, natural history and color theory. Our home field and studio is conveniently located one block from Chastain Park playground and all camps are led by Christy Knight, Art Coach and Science Illustrator. 

Please pack a lunch for your child.  Filtered cold water and snacks are provided.

Mountain Majesties Camps offer hands on information garnered from a lifetime of experiences in these visually rich and inspiring places.  Campers will learn all they ever wanted to know about these magical, cool spots teeming with art and nature before going on that family trip or simply enjoy this week of immersion in the subject.  Our studio time will include Native American art forms as well as independent choices from our favorite subjects.  Our last day will include a taste of campfire s’mores!

Mountain Majesties: Appalachian Spring________________      June 6-10, August 8-12

From Maine to Georgia, we’ll learn about the ark of wildlife in these ancient misty peaks and their geologic past scientists are still unearthing.  Exploring the phenomenon that makes this mountain chain so rich in biodiversity, we’ll learn how to identify wildflowers and wildlife as we listen to the stories they tell, including those from a bat cave.  Drawing inspiration from the music of great American Composer Aaron Copeland, we’ll create watercolor and torn paper collages to capture the layered effect of these sublime ridges we call the Appalachians.

Mountain Majesties: Across the Great Divide                               June 20-24, August 1-5

From ghost towns to cliff dwellings to the continental divide, we’ll see what this gorgeous territory called the southwest has to offer as we take a journey across the United States with our time and space traveling paint box.  We’ll learn to draw mountains and other geologic formations as we map them from above, afar, nearby and even below.  Then we’ll bring the art and culture of this visually inspiring place to life with studies in wildflowers, wildlife and the southwestern paintings of Georgia O’Keeffe and photographs of Ansel Adams. 

Independent Design Week for Students, rising 4^th & above: June 27-July 1, August 15-19

Everything in our world was designed by someone.  What do you want to design?  A race car or fashion line, a house or stadium, space station or zoo?  Whatever it is, this week offers students the time to work on their dream projects in two and three dimensions.  We’ll learn how the design process works as we develop one team project and one individual project during the week.  Sharing her professional experiences, the Instructor will foster creativity in a motivating environment where older students can get those great ideas on paper and in model form.  Our last day will include a treat: design your own dessert!
