After School Classes

Below is a sampling of previous after school classes.  Christy Knight is also available for after school Programs and Workshops at Atlanta area schools and activity meetings such as Scouts.  Please contact us for more information.  Themes for children's programming include those you see here as well as:  The Art & Science of Color, Painting Flowers up close like Georgia O'Keeffe, The World of Trees, Botanical Drawing and any of our previous camp themes which may be found in document form on the bottom of the classroom page.

Learn to Draw People

This fall class offers children in grades 3-5 the opportunity to learn how to draw people in an engaging format.  From head to toe we’ll study the forms of the human body as well as facial features and put it all together to create final drawings using such techniques as contraposto poses and ¾ view faces just like the Masters have done for ages.  Say goodbye to frustrated stick figure drawing and hello to all the possibilities in sharpening these important life skills.  Class time involves supervised outdoor play, weather permitting, and a snack.

Capturing Nature in the Fall
Thursdays, September 9-October 28, 2010
8 weeks $150 plus a $25 supply fee due upon registration

Be outside after school this fall!

Skills learned: identifying trees by their leaves,
River ecosystem studies including a field trip to the Chattahoochee,
drawing and painting techniques, and exploring nature in depth,
encouraging ongoing independent study

We will be on the lookout for berries, mushrooms, colorful leaves, and other signs of fall as we learn exciting ways to capture these changes on paper.

This class will explore drawing and painting techniques in a variety of mediums as we enjoy working independently in nature and learn to identify and draw trees, plants and animals.  Each lesson includes outdoor playtime and a snack.

Drawing From Great Literature
Tuesdays, 4-5:30 pm, January-March 2010 (8 weeks)

Listen to The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame while learning to draw the animal characters within...

We will also study the exquisite illustrations for this story by Michael Hague.
Elementary age students will be given the unique opportunity to learn important drawing tools and techniques while listening to the Instructor read The Wind In the Willows by Kenneth Grahame.  This classic, witty and engaging story provides a foundation for our studies as we learn to draw landscapes, animals and other aspects of nature using our right brains while our left brains are free to focus on listening to the great writing of the story.

This is a technique the Instructor uses in producing her own work and is proven to increase focus and the quality of the artistic experience, not to mention exposure to great literature.

"He thought his happiness was complete when, as he meandered aimlessly along, suddenly he stood by the edge of a full-fed river...All was a-shake and a-shiver-glints and gleams and sparkles, rustle and swirl, chatter and bubble.  The Mole was bewitched, entranced, fascinated.  By the side of the river he trotted as one trots, when very small, by the side of a man who holds one spellbound by exciting stories; and when, tired at last, he sat on the bank, while the river still chattered on to him, a babbling procession of the best stories in the world, sent from the heart of the earth to be told at last to the insatiable sea."

~from The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame
